Spectacular Alaska Bird Watching
JOHNNY'S EAST RIVER LODGE is located in the
Pacific
Flyway where it narrows to a mere 10 miles wide. There
are
large breeding colonies of Arctic Terns, Glaucous Gull,
Aleutian Tern as well as several pairs of the Parasitic Jaeger,
Long-Tailed Jaeger, and Pomarine Jaeger, these birds are
very protective of their nests so "watch out". Bald Eagles,
resident and migrating, gather here in vast numbers for the
spring Eulachon (Pronounced who-lee-gun) a smelt like fish,
run, you cansee hundreds of
Eagles at times depending on the
strength of the run. Many Bald Eagles concentrate here for
the fall Salmon runs during September and October also.
Fall Migration
See hundreds of Trumpeter Swan, thousands of Whistler Swan
and untold thousands of other migrating avian life. Both waterfowl
and non waterfowl fill the skies around the lodge, and because
we are located on one of the few undisturbed wetlands prior to
their fall migration to the lower forty-eight states, they make the
East River their "staging area", it is an awesome sight. All this
is
within easy walking distance from the lodge and at times you
don't even have to walk anywhere, just sit on the deck or one of
the lawn chairs and just try to absorb it all.
Spring Migration
This is a time when life in the North Lands is
renewed and it is a spectacular sight and
experience. Thousands upon thousands of
Geese and ducks as well as Hundreds of
Swan make their biannual stop at the East River
before their more northerly trip to the breeding grounds.
Spring or
Fall
There may be thousands of migrating waterfowl,
but there's also many other avian life moving
through. Several type of Hawk, Goshhawk,
Sharp-shinned Merlin, Kestrel, Owl, Great Gray,
Hawk-Owl, Boreal, and a vast variety of shore
birds such as Plover, Killdeer, Sandpiper, Yellow leg,
Snipe and many others.
